Singer-songwriter Justine Lucas captures audiences with her intimate approach to musical storytelling and her soothing yet emotional voice. Born in San Francisco, raised in Haight Ashbury by punks and goths, Lucas writes from a unique perspective about her generation. Influenced by Folk, Bluegrass, Americana, Gypsy Jazz, and Blues, this multi-instrumentalist is creating a new kind of folk music that honors musical roots while growing outwards from them, breaking bounds lyrically and texturally with her voice.
Justine Lucas studied World Music and Dance at SFSU and was a part of the university's Gospel choir and University choir, where she performed a repertoire ranging from the energetic projection of choir songs to intricate harmonies in Russian classical pieces. She is constantly expanding her vocal language and pronunciation skills and currently sings in English, French, Scottish, Welsh, Manx, Cornish, Gaelic, Spanish, and Sou Sou (West African/ Guinean dialect). She has been composing, performing, and touring for the last 11 years and has worked on over 15 albums in recording studios with local band projects and solo. She has performed at many great SF bay venues including The Great American Music Hall, Slims, Yoshi's, The Haight-Ashbury Street Fair, Herbst Theatre and more.
“San Francisco based minimalist avant singer songwriter Justine Lucas has touched our hearts with her recordings of smooth rhythmic guitar melodies, and softly haunting atmospheric backdrops of birds singing, and natural sounds bellowing under her beautiful voice.”
- SF DELI MAGAZINE
“It’s like an Eastern European circus took a folky Appalachian holiday. It’s both quiet, classical bedtime story and traveling, rambling, carnival party.”
- SF BAY GUARDIAN
